PROCESS
Once we receive a renewal application the permit immediately gets renewed
for the next five years. A new card will be sent to the permit holder
within approximately one to two weeks prior to the date of expiration. This is
regardless of when the renewal application is received unless received after
expiration date.
BACKGROUND CHECK
Occasionally a permit holder gets involved in criminal activity which
results in the revocation of his or her permit. The renewal process also
includes conducting another background check. However, the renewal is
automatic. There will be no break in the validity period of a permit. Even
in cases where a criminal incident needs to be investigated, the permit
remains valid until the investigation is complete. If corrective action is
ultimately needed, the permit holder will be notified. This is why it is
possible that a permit holder may receive a renewal sticker and then a short
period later receive a letter revoking the permit.
